In observance of International Day of Democracy the Electoral Department of Saint Lucia is joining the United Nations in celebrating under the theme, “Engaging Young People on Democracy –Highlights the challenges and opportunities of young people engaging in democratic processes.
The electoral Department has observed a decrease in voters’ participation and as such we believe that it an opportune time to continue educating them on democracy and it role within the society. Many of our youths have minimal understanding of the origins of Adult Suffrage, giving effect to the share mandate of the Electoral Commission and the National Youth Council to promote the participation of citizens in political life of the country. Our role is to build and increase voter registration.
Meaningful democracy requires the meaningful participation of youth, we at the electoral department believe it’s an opportunity to reflect on all our agencies and stakeholders’ effort to protect, support and empower young people in Saint Lucia especially as they engage in democratic processes.
