The International Day of Democracy celebrates its fifteenth anniversary this year on September 15, 2022. This day is observed annually to strengthen democracies and draw attention to their values and principles. The theme of this year’s Democracy Day “importance of media freedom to democracy, peace, and delivering on the Sustainable Development Goals”.
According to United Nations (UN) Secretary General António Guterres, “as we mark the fifteenth anniversary of Democracy Day, members should focus on a cornerstone of democratic societies-free, independent, and pluralistic media.” He goes on to say that democracy cannot exist without a free press. There is no freedom without freedom of expression.
In response to the UN call for participation, the Saint Lucia Electoral Department will conduct a number of activities in September and October 2022, inclusive of
- Staff Training
- Visits to some of the elderly care institutions to donate cleaning suppliers.
